Ricardo M. Terra, MD, PhD, MPH is associate professor of Thoracic Surgery at University of Sao Paulo Medical School and chief of the Surgical Thoracic Oncology Division at Sao Paulo State Cancer Institute (ICESP) in Brazil. His fields of interest are thoracic oncology, minimally invasive surgery (VATS and robotics), and clinical research.



He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Sao Paulo, where he finished medical school (M.D) in 1999. Then, he completed the residency program in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery in 2004 at Hospital das Clinicas, the University of Sao Paulo Medical School teaching hospital. In 2008, he was awarded a PhD degree in science at University of Sao Paulo and in 2012 a Master degree at Harvard University. In 2010 he was assigned as the coordinator of Thoracic Surgery at Sao Paulo State Cancer Institute and in 2013, he got the position of associate professor of thoracic surgery at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School.

Since 2006, at University of Sao Paulo, Dr. Terra has implemented and developed the minimally invasive surgery program (VATS lobectomy and robotic surgery), reinforced the thoracic oncology program and carried out several clinical research projects.

Currently, he is scientific director of the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery and implemented the national BSTS Database. He is also an active member of several international societies as ESTS, STS, and IALSC.
